Inova Leads the Charge in Promoting Health Equity Through Groundbreaking Cardiac Care Initiatives

In an inspiring response to the national call for racial justice and health equity, the Inova Health System established the Inova Schar Heart & Vascular Committee on Equity Education and Outreach. Born out of the tumultuous events following Mr. George Floyd's tragic death in 2020, the committee embodies Inova's commitment to dismantling healthcare disparities and fostering a culture of inclusion within its community.

Under the leadership of Dr. Kelly Epps and Dr. Cleveland Francis, the committee has crafted a multifaceted strategy to address systemic bias, racism, diversity, and disparities in care. By forming subcommittees dedicated to recruitment, onboarding, community engagement, mentorship, and healthcare disparities, Inova is taking concrete steps towards realizing its mission.

Sharmaine McCoy, DNP, a pivotal figure in the committee, passionately states, "Our mission goes beyond the hospital walls. It's about reaching into our communities, understanding their needs, and dismantling the barriers to equitable healthcare one step at a time."

One of the critical areas where Inova's initiative shines is in its battle against healthcare disparities in cardiac care. The statistics are stark; African-Americans are significantly more likely to suffer from conditions such as heart failure and undergo amputations. This discrepancy underscores a grave need for targeted interventions and education to prevent such outcomes. Inova's focused efforts in community screenings for heart failure, amputation, valvular heart disease (VHD), and atrial fibrillation (AF) highlight a proactive approach to bridging the gap in cardiac care disparities.

The Inova Schar Heart & Vascular Committee has identified key areas where disparities are most pronounced. For instance, in the realm of VHD treatments like TAVR, minority patients are vastly underrepresented. Similarly, significant racial and sex disparities exist in the recognition and management of AF, with black patients less likely to be aware of or treated for the condition. These facts are not just statistics; they represent real people, real families, and real communities disproportionately affected by the healthcare system's inequities.

David Reich MHA, RCIS, Director Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, another committee member, adds, "Awareness is the first step, but action is what truly makes a difference. Through our community outreach and education programs, we're not just sharing information; we're building trust and laying down the foundation for a healthier future for all."

Through initiatives like the Inova Cares Clinic for Families, Inova has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to reaching underserved populations. Screening and education efforts are designed not only to detect conditions early but also to empower individuals with the knowledge to manage their health proactively. These outreach activities, often conducted in partnership with local churches, schools, and community organizations, are vital touchpoints for promoting health equity.

In 2023 alone, Inova's committee participated in 11 community outreach events, offering screenings for AFib and blood pressure to hundreds of participants. These events serve as a beacon of hope, illustrating the tangible impact of Inova's work on individuals' lives. For example, the partnership with Bethlehem Baptist Church and the Joyful Hands Community Day events underscore Inova's dedication to accessible healthcare.

Sharmaine McCoy reflects on the journey, "Each event, each screening, each person we reach is a step towards a future where health equity is not an aspiration but a reality. It's a profound responsibility and a mission we carry in our hearts."

Looking ahead, Inova is exploring opportunities to broaden its outreach to encompass other critical areas like women’s health, endocrinology, nutrition, and mental health. The recent Self-care expo is a testament to this evolving approach, where dozens of community members benefited from screenings and health education.

Inova's pioneering efforts to close the cardiovascular care gap through targeted outreach, community partnerships, and comprehensive screening initiatives are not just commendable; they are transformative. By addressing the complex web of factors contributing to healthcare disparities, Inova is laying the groundwork for a future where health equity is not an aspiration but a reality.

As Inova continues to lead by example, its initiatives offer a blueprint for how healthcare institutions can actively contribute to dismantling systemic barriers to health equity. Through dedication, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the communities they serve, Inova is not just changing the landscape of healthcare; it is changing lives, one heartbeat at a time.
