The Cardiogenic Shock Workgroup, a key initiative within the Virginia Heart Attack Coalition (VHAC), leads a statewide effort to enhance outcomes for cardiogenic shock patients across Virginia. This collaborative team of cardiology and critical care experts, data specialists, and healthcare leaders is dedicated to advancing care through innovative protocols, rigorous data tracking, and shared learning.

Our aim is to set a statewide standard for cardiogenic shock care that not only unifies treatment approaches but also harnesses the collective insights of Virginia’s top healthcare institutions. By aligning on evidence-based practices and leveraging the latest in hemodynamic monitoring and outcome metrics, we are building a cohesive framework that can be applied across diverse clinical settings.

Strategic Goals:

1. Standardized Protocol Implementation

   • Roll out a refined, statewide protocol based on the INOVA Fairfax model, specifically tailored to meet Virginia’s unique patient needs and healthcare landscape. This protocol will guide care and enable consistent, high-quality treatment across all VHAC-affiliated institutions.

2. Comprehensive Data and Metric Tracking

   • Define and measure critical metrics, from patient hemodynamics to discharge disposition, providing actionable insights to continually elevate patient care standards. By focusing on key indicators, we aim to drive informed, data-backed improvements in cardiogenic shock treatment.

3. Real-World Application Through Case Learning

   • Present clinical cases at regular intervals to allow VHAC & VCSQI members to evaluate the protocol in action, discuss challenges, and share successful practices. This shared knowledge strengthens each institution’s ability to implement and refine cardiogenic shock care effectively.

4. Statewide Data Collaboration and Registry Integration

   • Advocate for the adoption of the AHA’s shock registry across VHAC institutions, enabling Virginia to become a leader in cardiogenic shock data collection and research. Pilot programs at select sites will set the stage for broader integration, driving a data-driven approach to patient outcomes.

5. Enhanced Collaboration Across Institutions

   • Engage Virginia’s healthcare leaders, clinicians, and data managers in ongoing discussions and strategy sessions to shape an optimal approach for cardiogenic shock care. Outreach and marketing efforts will also be employed to broaden institutional engagement, maximizing impact across the state.
