Join Us: VCSQI Summer Quarterly Meeting (Virtual)
The Virginia Cardiac Services Quality Initiative (VCSQI) invites physicians, surgeons, nurses, advanced practice providers, quality leaders, administrators, researchers, data managers, and healthcare professionals across Virginia to join us for our upcoming Summer Quarterly Meeting.
As healthcare continues to evolve, meaningful improvement depends on collaboration, shared learning, and practical strategies that can be translated into real-world care. Cost and Quality Review
Best Practice Spotlight:
Emerging Approaches in Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Prevention and Quality Improvement
Presented by Dimitrios Pousious, MD - University of Virginia
Postoperative atrial fibrillation remains an important focus area in cardiac surgery and quality improvement efforts. Following the release of updated STS Clinical Practice Guidelines, this discussion will explore evolving strategies surrounding Afib prophylaxis and implementation considerations.
Earlier this year, Dr. Dimitrios Pousious (University of Virginia) initiated an Afib prophylaxis approach based on work performed at Mass General/Brigham utilizing low-dose amiodarone and posterior pericardiotomy, with encouraging early results. Attendees will hear real-world implementation experience and discuss how emerging evidence and clinical practice guidelines may influence care strategies and quality efforts moving forward.
Featured Presentation:
Enhancing Patient Education in Heart Surgery: A Patient Navigation and Education Class Model
Presented by Cindi Cole, BSN, RN and Cheryl Elkins, BSN, RN - Centra Lynchburg

Patient education continues to emerge as an important component of quality care and patient outcomes. This session will explore an innovative class-based education and navigation model designed to better prepare patients for the cardiac surgery journey through structured education, expectation setting, and engagement strategies. Attendees will gain insight into practical approaches that support patient understanding, readiness, and recovery.
This is the type of work VCSQI was built for—bringing data, evidence, innovation, and frontline experience together to improve care across Virginia.
Together, we can continue advancing quality, innovation, and patient-centered cardiovascular care across Virginia.
We look forward to seeing you there.
