The Virginia Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative (VCSQI) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Ourania Preventza, MD, MBA, FACS, to our Board of Directors.
Dr. Preventza is a highly accomplished surgeon and educator, currently serving as a professor with tenure at Baylor College of Medicine and soon to be the chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and co-director of the Heart and Vascular Service Line at UVA Health.
Dr. Preventza brings a wealth of experience in cardiac and aortic surgery, along with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to education and mentorship.
Her extensive credentials include:
Medical Degree from the Medical School of Athens
General Surgery Residency at Wayne State University
Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Mayo Clinic
MBA from Brandeis University with a focus on health care policy
Dr. Preventza is internationally recognized for her expertise in complex cardiac and aortic surgery, particularly in endovascular aortic techniques. She currently serves as President of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists and is an active leader in various professional organizations, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and Women in Thoracic Surgery.
With over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals, she is also an Associate Editor for both the Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the Journal of Cardiac Surgery. In recognition of her dedication to mentorship and resident education, she was awarded the prestigious 2023 Socrates Award by the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association.
