Spotlight on Dr. Mohammed Quader: Improving Efficiency in TAVR Procedures

The VCSQI Fall Quarterly Meeting will bring together leading voices in cardiac care to share strategies that drive outcomes and define excellence. Among the featured speakers is Dr. Mohammed Quader, MD (VCU), who will address one of the most pressing challenges in structural heart care: improving efficiency in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures.

Why This Topic Matters

TAVR has revolutionized the treatment of severe aortic stenosis, offering less invasive options with shorter recovery times and improved survival for patients who may not be candidates for open-heart surgery. But with demand rising and procedural complexity increasing, efficiency in TAVR programs is critical to ensuring timely access, consistent outcomes, and optimal resource utilization.

Recent data highlight wide variation in how TAVR is delivered across institutions—from patient selection to perioperative care and discharge practices. For health systems, this variation impacts not only patient outcomes but also cost, throughput, and equity of access.

About Dr. Quader

Dr. Mohammed Quader is a highly regarded cardiothoracic surgeon at Virginia Commonwealth University with extensive expertise in structural heart disease and advanced valve therapies. His leadership in cardiac surgery has focused on streamlining care pathways, reducing variability, and improving outcomes for patients undergoing complex procedures such as TAVR.

Presentation Highlights

In his session, Dr. Quader will explore:

  • Strategies to optimize efficiency in TAVR programs, from patient evaluation to post-procedure care.

  • Best practices to reduce variation in outcomes and costs while maintaining high-quality, patient-centered care.

  • Operational approaches to scale TAVR access, ensuring that growing patient demand can be met without compromising results.

  • Lessons learned at VCU and how they can be applied across hospitals participating in VCSQI.
